Emergent technologies are changing the professional landscape in AEC. Are you keeping up?

Writing today at Directions Magazine, Executive Editor Adena Schutzberg offers her GIS readership a “top 10” list of homework assignments, based on the questions she receives from her managerial/professional readership.

Most of her 10 items work equally well for AEC, but I’m changing a couple of them. I recommend you read Schutzberg’s article not only for the introductory background on these items, but for the comments from readers regarding what a 21st Century curriculum should look like.

Ten homework assignments for AEC professionals (adapted from Adena Schutzberg’s list):

1. RSS and GeoRSS
2. Podcasts
3. Sensor technology (data collection from both natural and built environments)
4. Open Source
5. Local search technologies
6. 3D
7. AEC in K-12 and Higher Education
8. Your local GIS situation (how good is your local geospatial data?)
9. GPS (18th Century: read a map; 19th Century: read a timetable; 20th Century: use a browser; 21st Century: use a GPS)
10. Mashups (combining data and applications from two web sources to create a hybrid application)
