Engineer Live has a report today on how a joint technology venture is reducing costs, improving safety and increasing the value of data by using 3D scan data to help with rework projects on North Sea oil and gas platforms.

The technology partners are AVEVA, with its PDMS plant design software, Z+F UK, a specialist in 3D laser scanning and point cloud data management, and Hi-CAD, a 3D data capture services company. The joint technology venture uses AVEVA's Laser Model Interface (LMI), a system that produces geometrically accurate digital models of existing structures. LMI allows for automatic clash detection when new design elements are introduced into the model.

As Engineer Live reports:

The technology is already being used on Shell Expro’s Sigma 3 and ONEgas projects in the UK sector of the North Sea. ... According to Colin Fairweather, engineering systems manager with Amec oil and gas, this solution has given the company a timely lead in a highly competitive race to improve the design process, improve safety and cut costs.
