Autodesk programmers have hidden an Easter Egg in DWFit, the pre-release software at Autodesk Labs that provides a zero-client DWF viewing experience in a web browser. When activated, it adds a Redline tool to the five existing tools.

To find and use this new tool, first go to DWFit. Allow the program to load completely. You will see five tool icons in the upper left, above the drawing (Load DWF, Zoom In, Zoom Out, Zoom Region, Zoom Extents). Click on the lower right corner of the drawing. After a few seconds, a sixth icon should appear, for Redline.

I have gotten it to work successfully and repeatedly with the Firefox browser, and have seen it work correctly in Internet Explorer, but as I write this I am not succeeding in getting it to load using my copy of Internet Explore. There’s probably a settings issue on my end. [UPDATE, AUGUST 28: My ability to ability to fetch the Easter Egg in Internet Explorer is now working fine. The only difference today is I'm working at home instead of with airport WiFi.]

Autodesk Labs is a breath of fresh air, allowing the company to show off new technology that can immediately make a difference in the productivity of its users. I know Autodesk corporate marketing is having a tizzy over it, but they would be wise to leave a good thing alone.

Why the tizzy, because it doesn't need marketing?
