After weeks of negotiations, Autodesk and leading MCAD vendor PTC will next week announce a direct interoperability agreement. Autodesk agrees to incorporate the GRANITE Interoperability Kernel from PTC into AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, while PTC will incorporate RealDWG technology from Autodesk into Pro/Engineering Wildfire. Other API's and toolkits will also be involved in the technology exchange.

The specifics of this deal do not directly affect AEC users, but it signals an important trend. It is a clear sign that Autodesk is serious when it claims that it wants to eliminate proprietary file formats as a competitive distinction and that it is willing to work directly with its competitors on an equal-exchange basis.
