SketchUp co-founder Brad Schell has decided to leave Google. The transition comes just 12 months after Google acquired the popular 3D design program. Schells last day as a Google employee will be tomorrow, March 30.

After successfully starting and selling two CAD startups in his career (the other being CadZooks, a design visualization program acquired by Autodesk in 1996), Schell says he just wants to take some time off. He has nothing but praise and admiration for Google, and says SketchUp is “in wonderful hands.” An avid outdoorsman, Schell recently bought what he calls a “dump” in a small town in the Pacific Northwest, near to both hiking and windsurfing opportunities.

In reflecting on his career in a chat today, Schell summed up his professional life so far as “blessed.” He said he intends to slow down and enjoy life for a while, but wouldnt rule out a return to the CAD industry “sometime, someplace.”
