Google is notoriously tight-lipped, rarely releasing specifc numbers regarding downloads of its products. Last year's announcement that Google Earth had surpassed the 100 million download mark, for example, was rare. Google has not released how many copies of SketchUp have been downloaded or sold since it acquired the popular 3D design software last year.

We may not know exactly how many copies of SketchUp are out there, but last week at COFES we did get an insight into how becoming part of Google has helped the product. Borealis Ventures partner Jesse Devitte, which was an investor in SketchUp, said that SketchUp daily downloads now exceed monthly downloads before the acquisition.

Companies publish numbers when it suits them marketing-wise -- or are required to by government decree.
