An estimated 2,000 citizens of Xujiahui, China (near Shanghai) have taken to the streets this week in what one participant calls “silence and peaceful” protest of a planned rerouting of an extension to the world’s first Maglev (magnetic levitation) train. The group’s stated goal is to embarrass the German financiers of the project by drawing attention to what they believe are inherent environmental and social dangers.

Our source in Xujiahui explains, “As you may understand we may have no power to fight with the government here, but we may try on Germany side. They should understand that they act against the human rights of Chinese people.” The frustration that brings them to the streets, our source says, is rooted in their understanding of safe distances for Maglev placement. “In Germany, they put the safe line at 300 meters for a Maglev line, while in China they put only 22.5 meters as the safe line. … No real Chinese people want Maglev at our homes.”

The protestors believe that the tight distances will expose residents to unhealthy magnetic radiation, as well as increase the possibility of a serious accident should the Maglev train somehow leave its track. Some residents in the public protests carry small posters of a skull with the slogan “Against Maglev.” The photos we have received show families and persons of all ages participating in the protests.

The initial planned path for the line also drew protest, so last week Shanghai authorities changed the original plan, shortening the total length of the line by three kilometers, increasing underground routes, and avoiding some densely-populated neighborhoods. But now Xujiahui residents, closer to the line under the change, are unhappy and are taking to the streets.

Maglev technology was first developed in Germany in the mid 20th Century; a line built from downtown Shanghai to the airport in 2003 was the first commercial project, built using joint German-Chinese financing. The Chinese government announced in 2007 that any additional construction of Maglev lines would use largely Chinese technology and investment, despite the initial involvement of German interests.

Transrapid, the German manufacturer and developer of the technology, describes Maglev as “the first fundamental innovation in the field of railway technology since the invention of the railway.” A guideway directs the passage of the train, while powerful magnets lift the train 10 mm. Other magnets provide propulsion and braking. In tests, the trains can run as fast as 500 kph. Transrapid uses a CAD/PLM combination of CATIA V5 and SAP/R3 for design and engineering.

The 22.5 meter was not calculated according to the HEALTH IMPACT ON LIVING PERSON, instead, it was calculated according to THE NUMBER OF HOUSES WILL BE REMOVED IN SHANGHAI.
(According to what PROFESSOR SUN ZHANG XIN in Tong Ji University(Shanghai) said)
http://www.zaobao.com/zg/zg080107_509_1.shtml
His opinion about the calculation was in the 2nd paragraph

Everyone, PLEASE, consider when you are travelling on this Maglev Train with 500KM/H speed some day in the future, over 1 MILLION residenter along the line are living in the threat of desease, radiation, noise, even gene variation every day and night. All the threat comes from the MAGLEV LINE. People spent all the money to buy a apartment in this city, but in the near future, they have to pay more health price in the hell zone along this MAGLEV LINE. PLEASE, tell more people about what is happening in Shanghai, if you really don't want this happen. PLEASE, TELL MORE PEOPLE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SHANGHAI, over one million people THANK YOU.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Wish you a very happy new year!

But hundreds of thousands of residents in Minhang disctrict, Shanghai are strongly shocked by the horrifying news that Shanghai municipal government plan to build THE SECOND MAGLEV to link the two airports, and this huge monster is designed to pass our beautiful and tranquil home along the Dianpu River, a major river in Shanghai, where trees are lined, flowers bloom all the year around, children run happily and elders play Taiji. However, all these are to be vanished with the arrival of the new SYMBOL of Shanghai. (Here please find bulletin on the website of Shanghai City Planning Bureau.http://www.shghj.gov.cn/News_Show.aspx?id=9725)

After reading the news on the line just 3 days before the new year of 2008, we can no longer fall asleep at midnight. We called the hotlines of the mass media to pour out our serious concern of the future life. NO RESPOND! We called the offices concerned. The lines are all the way BUSY! What should we do? We have to make our voice heard! We have to try each means to protect our graying parents and lovely toddlers from this MONSTER.

The following are our CONCERNS:

1. For the safe distance:
The new route plans to go down the north bank of Dianpu River, only around 50m away from our apartment building, which is far beyond 22.5m, the safe distance from each side of the track declared by Shanghai government. However, the German specification for the safe distance is 300m. Even though, German government hasn’t built any commercial maglev line inside the city yet. So, we doubt the relevant data offered by the government.

2. For the influence of electromagnetism radicalization pollution:
Although we can’t find any research report to prove if or not the maglev has any long-term or short-term damage to human health since it is not popularized on business yet, we can easily find some clues from the common sense about electromagnetism radicalization pollution:
a) it might cause leucocythemia among children;
b) it might lead to more cancer patients among the younger generations, and speed the reproduce of cancer cells;
c) it might endanger human procreation system;
d) it might endanger human cardiocirculatory;
e) it might endanger human optical system;
f) it also might endanger the green plantations nearby.

3. For the influence of noise pollution:
The current line in Pudong has already caused more than 90 db noise. How can we imagine when it goes under our noise?

4. For economic outcome:
As we know, the current maglev line in Pudong has become a very famous failure case in business. China's state-run China Daily reported in July, 2007 that the line had piled up losses of $125 million. So, maybe it is the government’s wish that another 3-billion-yuan investment might alleviate the great financial loss of the first line. However, who can make sure that the situation will not be a bit worse? Even if it works, does it worth to make such a great investment to save JUST a span of several minutes on the way? Anyway, who REALLY care those minutes? The masses? The businessmen? The foreign visitors? The scientists? Or the government? However, how about leaving the 3 billion yuan for those who are suffering from poverty, hunger, disease and lack of education opportunity? We sincerely hope our government can make any investment for the sake of people’s health, people’s life and people’s happiness.
Besides, once the plan is passed, the price of our apartment will be decreased by 50% or more. How can a common family face such financial loss since they’ve spent almost all of their savings on the apartment, some are even on the loan.

So we have to write to you, to the whole world for help! We need your help to stop this new plan for maglev! We need your help to fight for a real people-oriented government! We need your help to protect our beautiful home from any damage at the very beginning of A GREEN OLYMPIC YEAR!

Thank you very much on behalf of all the residents who may concern!

Faithfully yours,
A resident waiting for your help

One and half years ago, My wife and I, cherishing full hope for brilliant future living, bought an apartment near beautiful Dianpu River. We both like to walk around the river with hand in hand, seeing children playing games, pets gambolling... BUT, nowdays everything is damaged by the horrifying news, MAGLEV.
What we only want is a peacuful, tranquil living enviroment.
Inside this city, there is no mass media we can go to for help.
We have no other choice, hope every warmhearted people in the world could support us to protect our home.

The Chinese Govern't is exercising "White Horror" on this Shanghai Maglev issue. Our neighbour's phones were taped. Internet forums were being monitored. Banners hung out the window were ordered to remove. Police came to visit us in the middle of the night. Media came to interview were asked to leave. No newspaper or TV reports. There were "strangers' loitering our streets. Discussions on the internet were banned. Postings were ordered to delete in 3 hours or 15 days imprisonment. Banner makers in our region were told not to make banners for us. No photos allowed during our peaceful parade, yet the police took hundreds of pictures of us. Protestors were arrested. No real estate agent wants to help u sell our houses. The Gov't told us 22.5 meter is safe and we shouldn't believe what others said.......

Pls. help us,...............

But our shanghai Minghang district residents are strongly shocked by the bad news that shanghai plan to built meglev (Shanghai to Hangzhou airport line) in our populous community- nearby the dianpu River, where hundreds of thousands of residents live there.

Here please find bulletin on the website of Shanghai City Planning Bureau.
http://www.shghj.gov.cn/News_Show.aspx?id=9725

We are all thoroughly surprised by these following issues:
1. the new route plan to go through the north bank of Dianpu River, which is only around 50m to our apartment building.
=> the Germany rule is 500m from the building, even though, they haven’t built any real meglev line inside the city
2. we are worried about two main influences: 1. electromagnetism radicalization pollution; 2. noise
=> who can offer the evience that within this short distance there will be no hurt to our residents health and normal daily life
3. For electromagnetism radicalization pollution:
Because meglev is not popularized on business, we can’t find any research report to prove if or not it has any long-term or short-term disserve to human health, but we can easily find some clues from the common sense- electromagnetism radicalization pollution:
1) probably the route cause of children leucocythemia
2) to place a premium on cancer and speed the reproduce of cancer cells
3) endanger human procreation system
4) endanger human cardiocirculatory
5) endanger human optical system
4. For noise: the current line in Pudong has caused more than 90 db noise, we can’t image how it would be near our home
5. For economic issue:
1) as we know, the current meglev in pudong has become a very famous failure case in business
2) the new line need another 3 billion RMB budget while many many poor people are suffering from poverty, hunger, disease and lack of education opportunity.
3) The price of our apartment will be decreased by 50% or more. But they spend almost all of our treasure any even debt to buy it.

So we have to write to you , to the world to ask for help! We need your support, understanding and assistance to stop this new plan for meglev!

Thank you very much in behalf of all the residents who may concerned!

The to-be-constructed Maglev will influence 1.6 million residents close to the new line, including the venue of holding 2010 Expo. I believe many foreigners will come to Shanghai to attend the Expo and maybe some of you may have to stay with the Expo for over 6 months. If you happen to live around the Expo venue, you might also "ENJOY" the noise and the radiation of the Maglev.

We aren't like Munich people, who can express their disatisfy and different views on the Maglev. We can't......the only thing we can do is to ask the internet to help us and draw foreigners attention.....almost all the Chinese media refuse to exposure news regarding protesting the Maglev.

Even if we can't stop the construction of the Maglev in Shanghai, at least we should have the right to let the people out of Shanghai and China know the truth......YOU HATE MAGLEV - NO MAGLEV ON EARTH

There is also a plan to build a 37,4km-transrapid-line from Munich-Center to Munich-Airport.

And theres is also a very hot public discussion about it:

http://www.toytowngermany.com/wiki/Transrapid
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transrapid_M%C3%BCnchen
http://www.br-online.de/bayern-heute/thema/transrapid/index.xml

Nevertheless, i have never heard of a safe line of 300 or 500 meters in the discussions here - that would be impossible through the Munich center.

Good luck to you.

The discussion in germany is a discussion about the increasing costs. From the technical point of view the track in munich is just long enough to accelerate to full speed and then brake the other half.

A started referendum maybe will be stopped, because it touches financial budgets and thats supposedly not according to law. (...)

The city administration is against the Transrapid, but the district government of bavaria is forcing it (other party).

Like the prime ministers party they are more related to business then other parties and maybe don't think as much at human rights as they say.
